A Chinese man's romantic proposal took an unexpected and humorous turn when his girlfriend unknowingly ate the engagement ring hidden in a cake, sparking laughter.
The amusing incident was shared by a netizen surnamed Liu from Guang'an, Sichuan province, on a popular social media platform. Her post, titled "attention, all men: Never hide a proposal ring in food!" quickly gained traction, entertaining thousands.
Liu recounted that after arriving home hungry one evening, she eagerly devoured a taro and meat floss cake her boyfriend had prepared. "The cake was covered with a thick layer of meat floss, so I was just chewing it until I bit into something hard. I immediately spat it out," she explained.
Initially assuming it was a bad quality, Liu prepared to complain to the bakery. However, her boyfriend, noticing her confusion, examined the foreign object. After wiping it clean, he revealed, "Honey, I think this might be the ring I was going to propose to you with."
Caught off guard, Liu thought he was joking but soon realised it was indeed a gold ring. In the awkward moment that followed, her boyfriend hesitantly asked, "What do we do now? Should I still kneel?" Liu, unable to contain her laughter, encouraged him to proceed with the proposal, which she accepted.
Later, Liu described the event as the "most dramatic scene of the year" and advised against using food as a proposal medium. "This will be a memory we will never forget, but this proposal method is a bit risky. I hope others take our story as a caution and avoid trying it themselves," she told the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald.
The video of the incident went viral, with netizens flooding the post with humorous reactions. One user joked, "The strength of her bite is no less than that of an adult cheetah." Another congratulated the couple, adding, "Especially to this bride-to-be for her strong teeth!"
A third commenter playfully noted, "This must be what is called 'a couple's love can break gold!'" while another advised, "This will be something you'll laugh about even when you're old and grey! But seriously, guys, no more hiding rings in food. Imagine if it were a diamond that could easily break someone's tooth!"
