Food shopping accounts for the biggest proportion of households' "basic spending" in Northern Ireland, according to research from the Consumer Council.

That is the highest level since it started monitoring these figures two years ago.

It comes as the rate at which prices are rising, known as inflation, remained unchanged last month at 3.4%.

Every quarter the Consumer Council tracks what households earn and spend using data from Grant Thornton on how UK regions are impacted by the cost of living crisis.
