Modi says plane crash 'heartbreaking beyond words'

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reacted to the news of the plane crash, which he said was "heartbreaking beyond words."

In a post on X, Modi said "the tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us."

"In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it," the prime minister said.

He added that he was in contact with local ministers and authorities, who were working to assist the victims of the accident and their families.

Air India Flight 171 crashes after take off while en route to London, Gatwick

The airline's chairman confirmed that Air India Flight 171 had been "involved in a tragic accident" after a plane crash was reported in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat state on Thursday.

"With profound sorrow I confirm that Air India Flight 171 operating Ahmedabad London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today," Air India chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran said in a statement.

Air India confirmed that the flight was carrying 169 Indian nationals. 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian.

"The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals. We have also set up a dedicated passenger hotline number 1800 5691 444 to provide more information," the airline said in an update on X in which the usual Air India branding had been changed to black.

Air India said it was giving its full cooperation to authorities investigating the incident.
