An Air India flight carrying more than 240 passengers crashed shortly after take off from Ahmedabad, en route to London

A plane crashed in India's northwestern city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat state on Thursday, according to media reports.

Police said that 242 passengers were on board at the time.

AFP news agency cited fire service officials with the information and said they could not provide details of the plane or any numbers in terms of casualties.

Reuters news agency reported that Air India flight AI171 had been involved "in an incident" and that the flight had been operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick.
