Following the death of Pope Francis, Vatican officials sealed his residences at Casa Santa Marta and the Apostolic Palace, following procedures observed after the death of a pontiff.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo, oversaw the closure of both residences — one on the second floor of Casa Santa Marta, where the Pope lived, and another on the third floor of the Apostolic Palace.
Although the Apostolic Palace apartment was traditionally used by previous popes, Francis largely avoided it, preferring the more modest setting of Casa Santa Marta. He only used the palace apartment occasionally, such as for the Sunday Angelus.
Sealing the papal apartments is part of long-established Vatican protocol following the death of a pontiff.
