A school said it had decided to close due to a "serious incident" near its building.

In an email seen by the BBC, St John's Church School in Peterborough said "police are currently processing a site in close proximity to the school", which had led to the decision to shut.

An image showed a large police presence near the Ortongate Shopping Centre on Sunday night, and an area remained cordoned off near the entrance on Riseholme on Monday morning.

Cambridgeshire Police has been contacted for comment.

The school said it would "continue to monitor the situation" and update parents and carers about reopening.

The shopping centre is open as normal, but the rear car park is closed.
