An organized fridge can make
meal prep
easier and cut down on
food waste
, but a new trend on
social media
is taking this idea to a whole new level. Recently, people have been transforming their refrigerators into eye-catching displays. They’re decorating inside their fridges with elegant picture frames, fresh flowers, and other creative touches. This trend is turning everyday food storage into a stylish and imaginative showcase, and it’s sparking both fascination and debate online.
What is fridgescaping?
Fridgescaping involves decorating the inside of your
refrigerator
as if it were any other room in your home.
People are arranging produce like bouquets of asparagus in vases and using charming storage containers such as pink glass pitchers and antique ceramic butter dishes.
A trend dividing opinions
The trend has polarized viewers. Some people love the idea of a beautifully curated fridge, while others think it’s a bit too much.
Fridgescaping isn’t a completely new idea. Kathy Perdue, a retired designer, first coined the term in a 2011 blog post. Her approach focused on neatly organizing and beautifying everyday food items. However, the fridgescapes seen on TikTok are often much more elaborate, resembling intricate Christmas displays.
Why fridgescaping is catching on
Beyond just looking good, fridgescaping has some practical benefits. By incorporating food into the décor—like asparagus in a mason jar or berries in a porcelain basket—fridgescapers make their food more visible and accessible. This helps reduce food waste by preventing forgotten items from going bad.
Fridgescaping can also make cooking more exciting. Lynzi Judish, a popular fridgescaper, shared on TikTok that decorating her fridge has made her and her husband more creative with their meals. “Having so many beautiful things in the refrigerator has led us to be more creative with our meals,” she said.
Additionally, fridgescaping helps with cleanliness. The process usually starts with a deep clean of the fridge, and regularly decorating encourages ongoing tidiness. “Because the refrigerator is so clean all the time, all I need to do is wipe down the shelves,” Judish explained.
