Ro Khanna vs Dinesh D'Souza over American identity
Indian-origin Congressman Ro Khanna took a potshot at Indian-origin MAGA commentator Dinesh D'Souza after D'Souza defended his daughter, Danielle D'Souza, the wife of Rep Brandon Gill, as an American because she is a Christian born in America to a white mother.
The defense was necessitated by Hasan Piker's attack on Brandon Gill that his wife is Indian -- but the qualifiers that Dinesh D'Souza used to prove that his daughter is an American came under criticism.Democrat leader Ro Khanna said: "Dinesh, like your daughter I was born in America & have an Indian immigrant father. I am Hindu and my mom is not white. Does that make me any less American or matter in any sense?"Citing Abraham Lincoln's July 4 speech from 1858, Ro Khanna said Lincoln solved this conundrum as to who can be considered an American long ago.
"Lincoln said that if you believe in the Constitution, if you believe in the Declaration of Independence, then there is an electric chord that links your heart to the hearts of the men who fought in the Revolution for those principles, and that you are blood of the blood and flesh of the flesh of our founders.
He articulated why our nation, unique in the history of the world, is constituted based on a devotion to a common set of ideals and principles," Khanna wrote.
"Dinesh the irony is that the President you worked for --Ronald Reagan --who gave an Indian immigrant with a thick accent a job in his White House knew this Lincoln passage very well," Khanna added.
How did the controversy start?
Streamer Hasan Piker told Axios that America conducts more terrorism than Al-Qaeda. Republican leader Brandon Gill said Piker is a living example why US should end birthright citizenship -- as Piker was born in America to Turkish nationals.
Brandon Gill said Piker was raised in Turkey to hate western civilization and now he spends his time working to make America weaker and America's enemies stronger.Piker reminded Brandon Gill that his wife is Indian.
To this, Gill's father-in-law Dinesh D'Souza said his daughter is not an Indian. Danielle was born in America, and then Dinesh added that Danielle is Christian and her mother is white. This is where a new controversy started, as social media users slammed Dinesh for defending his daughter's nationality and making Christianity a part of it.Brandon Gill too defended his wife's nationality. "My wife is an American, born in America to American citizens. She deeply loves our nation and its culture. You, on the other hand, were born to foreign invaders and want to turn America into the third world culture you were raised in, while advocating for communism at your $3 million mansion in between electrocuting your dog," Gill wrote.
