Ian Hislop’s taxi 'shot at near Private Eye office'

A taxi containing British journalist Ian Hislop was reportedly shot at in central London.

The editor of Private Eye was in a black cab just after 10:00 BST on Tuesday when a bullet hit and damaged his window, The Guardian first reported.

The incident, which was reported to the police by the cab driver, occurred in Soho on Dean Street, near where it meets Oxford Street, close to the Private Eye office.

Both the driver and Mr Hislop were said to be unharmed.

Mr Hislop has been the editor of the political satire magazine Private Eye since 1986.

He is also a team captain on the long-running BBC satirical quiz, Have I Got News For You.

A Met spokesperson told The Guardian that officers received a report of a firearms discharge on Dean Street, Westminster, on Tuesday morning.

The spokesperson added: “The driver of a London black taxi reported he was stationary in traffic when a shot was fired towards his vehicle, striking the window.

"There were no injuries. An investigation has been launched.”

The BBC has contacted the police and Mr Hislop's representatives for comment.
