The Los Angeles District Attorney has announced he will oppose the notorious Menendez brothers from being resentenced, something that could have led to their freedom.
Newly elected Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman's announcement goes against the position of his predecessor, George Gascón, who asked the court for resentencing and possible parole for the brothers. Both are serving life sentences.
Hochman outlined more than a dozen alleged lies the brothers have told and continue to stand by. He argued they have not fully accepted responsibility for their crimes and should not be released.
Lyle and Erik Menendez killed their parents in 1989 in their Beverly Hills mansion, a case that garnered worldwide attention at the time and more recently, has been captured in several docuseries.
The brothers have long maintained that the murders were driven by years of sexual and physical abuse, and concerns about their safety, rather than hopes of inheriting their fortune.
They are currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole in California.
