An investigation has begun after a 45-year-old man died following a collision between two gliders at an airfield, police have said.

Emergency services were called to the airfield in Hinton-in-the-Hedges, Northamptonshire at about 16:00 BST on Saturday, police said in a statement.

Officers said they were investigating alongside the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

They have appealed for anyone with mobile phone footage to come forward.

"Police, fire, and the ambulance service attended the airfield at Hinton-in-the-Hedges shortly before 16:00 [on Saturday] , following reports that two aircraft had collided as they came into land," police said.

"Northamptonshire Police and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances around the incident to understand the cause of the collision.

"They will remain at the site while this takes place."

The police statement added: "Anyone who may have information that could help with the investigation, including mobile phone footage, is asked to call Northamptonshire Police."

Hinton Airfield is a "small private airfield", the airfield's website says.
