Three people have been arrested after two males died in a crash in Newport.

Emergency services were called to Aberthaw Road, Newport, early on Thursday following a crash between a BMW and a motorbike.

Two people, believed to the be the driver and the pillion passenger of the motorbike, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The BMW is believed to have left the scene before police arrived.

An 18-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of murder, while a 24-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All three remain in police custody.

Police said specially trained officers will support the families throughout the investigation.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said it was called to the scene shortly after 01:30 BST on Thursday.

Two emergency ambulances were sent to the scene where the crews were supported by two Cymru High Acuity Response Units and an operations manager.

Advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in a Wales Air Ambulance charity car.
