A 57-year-old man was arrested in relation to an alleged incident at The Grand Hotel on Tuesday

A man arrested following an allegation of sexual assault at the Liberal Democrats’ annual conference in Brighton will face no further action, police have said.

A 57-year-old man from Bristol was arrested in relation to an alleged incident at The Grand Hotel in the early hours of Tuesday.

Sussex Police said a number of inquiries had been completed, including a review of available CCTV footage and witness accounts.

“Following further engagement with the victim and an interview with the man under caution, a decision was made to release him with no further action to be taken,” a spokesman said.

Insp Dan Eagle said: “Sussex Police are committed to tackling reports of sexual assaults and violence against women and girls (VAWG).

“Officers took robust action in investigating this incident. It has been concluded, pending any further information coming to light.”

The Lib Dems’ Glee Club event, a highlight of the social calendar during their conference, was taking place at the hotel at the time of the alleged incident.

A Lib Dem spokesperson previously said: "We are horrified this has happened. We assisted the police in identifying and arresting the suspect and have suspended him from the party."
