Archimedes was an ancient Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer, and inventor. He was born around 287 BC in Syracuse, a powerful Greek city-state located on the island of Sicily.
He is regarded as one of the greatest minds of the ancient world, right alongside figures like Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein.His famous quote, 'Give me a place to stand, a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world' is about physics, but over time it got interpreted as a life lesson beyond maths and physics.
Who was Archimedes?
Archimedes' father Phidian was an astronomer, which likely gave Archimedes an early introduction to mathematics and the stars.
He spent part of his youth studying in Alexandria, Egypt, which was the intellectual center of the world at the time, before returning home to Syracuse to serve his city.Archimedes made major breakthroughs that shaped the modern world. He created the field of statics, which studies how forces interact with objects at rest. He developed methods to calculate areas and volumes of complex geometric shapes, laying early groundwork for modern calculus nearly two thousand years before it was officially invented.
He was also a practical inventor. When King Hiero II of Syracuse asked Archimedes to solve everyday engineering problems, Archimedes delivered. He designed the famous Archimedes screw, a spiral pump that could lift water out of ship holds or irrigate dry farmland.His most famous personal story involves the discovery of buoyancy. As the story goes, the king asked Archimedes to figure out if a local goldsmith had cheated him by mixing cheap silver into a gold crown.
The catch was that Archimedes could not damage the crown to find out. While stepping into a full bathtub, Archimedes noticed water spilling over the edges. He realized that the volume of displaced water equaled the volume of his submerged body.
Knowing that gold is denser than silver, he could test the crown by dropping it in water and measuring the splash. Legend says he leaped out of the tub and ran through the streets naked, shouting "Eureka!" which means "I have found it!"Later in life, when Roman armies besieged Syracuse, Archimedes designed massive defense machines.
He built powerful catapults, giant grappling hooks known as the Claw of Archimedes to lift Roman warships out of the water, and systems of giant mirrors to focus sunlight onto enemy ships to set them on fire. Despite his efforts, Syracuse eventually fell to the Romans in 212 BC. A Roman soldier killed Archimedes while the mathematician was deep in thought, drawing geometry diagrams in the sand.
His last words to the soldier were reportedly, "Do not disturb my circles."

For a single human pushing down with average strength to move the planet even a fraction of an inch, the lever would need to extend for trillions of miles into outer space. Pushing that lever down far enough to make the planet budge would take millions of years of continuous movement at near light speed.
There is no solid ground in space to place the pivot point on, nor is there any physical material strong enough to build such a stick without it snapping instantly under its own weight.Archimedes knew this. He was using a dramatic exaggeration to help people understand a radical scientific concept.
