Shigeru Ishiba
, on Monday said he intends to call a
parliamentary election
on
October 27
, following his formal election as prime minister on Tuesday.
"It is important for the new government to be judged by the people as soon as possible and, if conditions allow, I hope to call a snap election, to hold a
general election
on October 27," Ishiba said.
Ishiba was chosen as the leader of the ruling
Liberal Democratic Party
(LDP) last Friday after succeeding outgoing leader
Fumio Kishida
. With the Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition holding a majority in parliament, Ishiba's election as prime minister is assured.
