" as a protest against the ruling Labor Party.
The lawmaker, previously known as Ben Dawkins, is an independent member of the upper house of Western Australia’s (WA) parliament, where Labor holds a majority.
"I've launched a political protest against the tyranny and systematic corruption of the Labor government in WA," he wrote on X, signing off as "Aussie."
In another post, he added, "Vote Labor Out! & Drill Baby Drill!," repeating a phrase used by US President Donald Trump to promote oil and gas extraction.

The parliament’s website now lists his name as Austin (Aussie) Letts Trump. He also posted a photo on X showing legal documents confirming the name change from the state’s registry of births, deaths, and Marriages.
Trump was expelled from the Labor Party in 2023 after allegations that he breached family violence restraining orders multiple times.
Western Australia’s Premier Roger Cook dismissed the name change. "This is simply attention-seeking stuff," he said at a press conference. "I'm not sure how much lower he can go."
Labor faces a state election in resource-rich Western Australia next month, followed by a national election that must take place by May.
