A fast-moving wildfire fuelled by gale-force winds tore through southern Crete overnight into Thursday, forcing the evacuation of over 1,500 people from homes and hotels.
Firefighters battled flames in the Ierapetra area, where forest and farmland burned under extreme conditions.
Ten aircraft supported 230 firefighters on the ground. Two people were rescued by boat, while six private vessels stood ready as a precaution.
Homes were damaged, and several residents treated for breathing issues, but no serious injuries were reported. The blaze lit up the night sky near Ferma and Achlia as emergency vehicles lined coastal roads.
Authorities warned of continued wildfire risks across the island and southern Greece amid a hot, dry summer.
Crete is one of Greece’s most popular destinations for both foreign and domestic tourists.
