Rubi Patricia’s obituary, released on Thursday, paints a picture of a vibrant young girl who touched the lives of many. “She was an avid reader, loved art, singing, and playing keyboard in the family worship band,” the obituary read. Attempts by the Associated Press to contact Rubi Patricia’s family on Wednesday evening were unsuccessful.
Born on March 17, 2010, in Madison, to Vicente and Jennifer Vergara, Rubi Patricia had a deep love for her pets, Ginger (cat) and Coco (dog), and shared a special bond with her family. A funeral service is planned for Saturday, December 21, at City Church in Madison, followed by burial at Roselawn Memorial Park.
The Incident
The shooting unfolded during a study hall session around 11 a.m. The shooter, identified as 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow—who also went by Samantha—used a 9 mm pistol to kill a teacher and Rubi Patricia before injuring six others and ultimately taking her own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
While the teacher’s name has not yet been released, the community mourns both lives lost and prays for the recovery of the injured.
Police responded swiftly after a teacher made a 911 call reporting the attack. Investigators are now probing possible motives, including allegations of bullying and Rupnow’s online activity.
