A spokesperson said: "This is a contained incident and firearms officers are in attendance as a precaution. Inquiries are ongoing.

"Officers will remain in the area and anyone with concerns can approach them."

A woman, who did not want to be named, described how she was prevented by police from getting to work in the town.

Speaking to BBC Scotland News at the edge of the police cordon, the woman said: "I went to walk down there and the policeman told me to 'get back', very loud.

"I explained that I was just trying to get to my work and he said he didn't care, I wasn't allowed, get back, it was a firearms situation."
