U.S. vetoes Palestinian request for full UN membership
The UN General Assembly voted by a wide margin on Friday to grant new "rights and privileges" in support of Palestinian statehood and called on the Security Council to favourably reconsider its request to become the 194th member of the United Nations.
Canada abstained from the vote. In a statement, Global Affairs Canada said it did so in favour of a two-state solution — a Palestinian state in the occupied West Bank and in Gaza alongside Israel.
