This is not the first time Trump has said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, while acknowledging that he remains unsure whether the Norwegian Nobel Committee will select him for the 2026 award.Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the announcement was imminent and suggested that the committee may not favour him.“I don't know what their decision is going to be,” Trump said of the 2026 award, which the Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce on Friday. “They have a reputation for maybe not giving it to people like me,” he added.“It is about that time,” Trump remarked. “But I was very honoured to receive it indirectly last time by the recipient, who said nobody in history deserves it more than President Trump.”This is not the first time Trump has said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump has repeatedly claimed that his diplomatic interventions since returning to the White House have helped resolve multiple international conflicts.
“I’ve done stuff that nobody else has ever done. I’m not bragging, I’m just telling you the facts. No president has probably ever settled any wars. I settled eight wars.”“But, whether I get it or not, I have done far more. And I think it would be a great discredit to them.
And I’m not saying that out of scorn, I’m saying that when you settle eight wars, and nobody’s never,” he added.Trump has also credited his administration’s trade and economic pressure, including threatened tariffs, with pushing countries towards diplomatic engagement. However, his claims about the extent of those diplomatic achievements have faced challenges, with conflicts continuing or resurfacing in several regions.Trump also criticised former US President Barack Obama, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. “Obama got it, and he didn’t do anything,” Trump stated. “He still doesn’t know what he got it for. He got it when he got elected, right at the beginning, and he had no idea why he got it.”Trump also referred to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who won last year’s Nobel Peace Prize.“Last time they gave it to a young lady who’s a fabulous person, and she said she didn’t deserve it, that I deserved it, and she gave it to me,” Trump said.Machado has previously praised Trump and said she wanted to share the honour with him. However, the Norwegian Nobel Institute has clarified that the Nobel Peace Prize itself cannot be transferred or shared.“A Nobel Prize cannot be revoked nor transferred to others. Once the laureate or laureates are announced, the decision is final,” said Erik Aasheim, a spokesperson for the Norwegian Nobel Institute.Aasheim added that while the prize itself cannot be transferred, laureates are free to dispose of the prize money as they wish. The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced on October 9, with the award ceremony scheduled for December 10. The prize is decided independently by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo.
