A number of arrests were made before England's opening Euro 2024 game against Serbia, according to the UK Football Policing Unit.

German police were responding to "an issue" in Gelsenkirchen but the UKFPU "do not believe" any UK nationals have been arrested and that the violence was instigated by foreign nationals.

"Our officers are at the location speaking to German colleagues," the UKFPU added.

"Our investigation team is now reviewing footage of the incident and if any UK nationals have been involved, football banning orders will be sought."

Videos on social media showed tables, chairs and bottles thrown in the city before riot police arrived.

Local police said there was "a physical altercation" in the city, but could not confirm whether it was football related or which nationalities were involved.

"The police are on site with sufficient personnel and have the situation under control," added Gelsenkirchen police.

Meanwhile, Hamburg police shot and seriously injured a man who they say threatened them on Sunday.

A Hamburg police spokesperson told the BBC the suspect was armed with a pickaxe and had tried to ignite a petrol bomb – but that officers responded with pepper spray and then shot him.
